Size by first-hour rating rather than gallons alone because that number shows how much hot water the unit can deliver during your busiest hour. Work out your real peak: how many showers overlap, whether a tub fills, and whether laundry and dishes run at the same time. A 40-gallon gas unit and a 40-gallon electric unit are not equivalent because gas recovers faster. We perform this calculation at the quote stage and show you the working rather than defaulting to the result.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Pennsylvania?+
Most municipalities in our service area require one, and requirements vary by borough and township. We arrange the permit and inspection where needed. It is worth caring about even when it feels like paperwork because an uninspected water heater installation can cause problems at resale and is exactly what a home inspector looks for.
Gas or electric water heater in South Central Pennsylvania?+
Both work well. Gas costs less to run in most of this region and recovers faster, so a smaller tank goes further. Electric is cheaper to install where no gas line exists and simpler to vent since there is nothing to vent. If your house is on oil, common in Middletown and on farm properties, the calculation is different and is worth doing properly rather than by default.
What is expansion control and why do I need it?+
If your house has a pressure-reducing valve or check valve at the meter, your plumbing is a closed system. Water expands when heated and, with nowhere to go, exerts sharply increased pressure during each heating cycle. A thermal expansion tank absorbs it. Without one, you get relief valve weeping, stressed fittings, and shorter tank life. This issue comes up constantly in newer developments where PRVs are standard.
Will you take away the old water heater?+
Yes, and it is included in the quote rather than added afterward. Old tanks are heavy, full of sediment, and awkward. Disposal is our problem, not yours. If the unit is in a finished basement, we protect the route out before moving it.
Can you install a water heater somewhere other than where the old one is?+
Often, and sometimes it is worth doing. Moving a heater out from under finished space, closer to the bathrooms it serves, or out of a stairwell closet that no longer meets clearance requirements can be good moves. It adds pipework, possibly vent work, and costs. We price it as an option alongside the like-for-like swap, so you can see the difference rather than just hearing that it is possible.
